There are hundreds of activities and sites to choose from when visiting Paris, and you’ll run out of time way before running out of museums and sites to see! But whether we visit for a weekend, a week, or even longer, these are my absolute favorite things to do every time I’m in Paris. They are the activities that never lose their charm…
Such a relaxing way to visit the sites of Paris lit up for you at night! There are many different boat companies to choose from, but I prefer the small ones, such as Les Vedettes du Pont Neuf. This year, I noticed the Hop on, Hop off Boats with 8 stops where you can get off and explore! I love that idea with their reasonably priced 2 day pass!
They have greatly expanded the walkways along the Seine, adding cafés, benches, bike paths… even a sandy beach in the summer! (Much to the chagrin of Parisian commuters, as some of the new walkways were previous faster routes across the city!) Worthy of a stroll both night and day, but don’t forget the bread and cheese, and the bottle of wine!
The steps of Montmartre are crowded at sunset, with tourists and locals alike, as peddlers of trinkets attempt to sell their wares.
The inside is equally impressive. entirely covered in mosaic artwork. Worshippers adore before the continuous presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
Surrounding this monumental basilica, is one of the most interesting parts of Paris with an amazing history! If you want to spend time exploring the steep cobblestoned streets of this area (more than just the basilica and the Place du Tertre square behind it) I’d recommend coming in the daytime. But coming for sunset and an early dinner, we returned easily with the metro.
Another favorite pastime is visiting the many, beautiful parks in Paris! One of my favorites is the Luxembourg Gardens, but all of them are so well manicured and peaceful… lovely places to spend an hour or an afternoon. This day we made our visit an entire afternoon! Although we were visiting at the end of October, the day was gorgeous! It’s not normally the weather expected of a Parisian October, so we took full advantage.
I admit. I’m a little crazy about Paris storefronts. I can wander and window shop for hours and hours. The beauty of Paris, and European cities everywhere, is found in all it’s details!
Then there’s the cafés…. The french have turned sitting at the café/brasserie into an art form. Even in the cold autumn wind, the sidewalk terraces are teaming with people! Heat lamps over each table allow outdoor seating well into the colder months. We truly enjoyed taking part in this very typical Parisian pastime, as you can see. A picture for every fabulous day we spent in Paris! Unlike the non-stop attention and service we are used to getting in the States, buying one beverage gives you the happy privilege of sitting for hours undisturbed by any waiter!
And as of this last trip, I have added this one extra “never-to-be-missed” activity to my list! I do love french food, french bread, french wine, French pastries…. and it’s a rare thing to find a BAD croissant in France. The french just wouldn’t stand for such a thing. But the butter croissants in La Maison d’Isabelle are far superior than any croissant I’ve ever tasted. Insanely good! And worthy of a detour. Every morning in fact. Just go!
Great advice! I hope to go to Paris next summer and will for sure try the croissants and try the hop on hop off boats! I studied in Paris a while ago so totally agree with everything else you recommend!
Anne, you will be surprised at how amazing those croissants are! I was thinking, well, how different can they be?…. and then…OH man….!
I love Paris, also. I must try the hop on hop off boat next time.
Hi Lynn, thanks for the comment. I like the BOAT hop on and off idea better than the BUS!
I just love Paris and you have hit on some great sites, that aren’t just the well-known hotspots. I’ll be in Paris for my third time next spring and I’m hoping the weather cooperates for a picnic in Luxembourg gardens!
Hi there, Tanya! There are SOOOO many things to choose from, but I wanted to choose just ones that I never tire of doing! Cuz really, some of the sites are so tiring with the lines and hustle bustle…. once is enough, or twice if you’re visiting with a first timer. But I like the Magical side of Paris! Just gliding by all the sites from a boat, or meandering along the side of the river….. I’ve always thought I should have learned to paint or write poetry, haha! but that’s the Paris I love. Thanks for the comment.
I didn’t make it to Montmartre when I visited Paris this summer but will definitely have to check it out next time! Also will be seeking out your croissant recommendation!
Hi Sarah! Just get off at the closest metros: Abbesses – Line 12 green or
Anvers – Line 2 blue. (One of my upcoming posts will be on How to understand the Paris Metro, cuz it’s so easy but people are intimidated by it till they see how easy it is!)
It’s been more than two decades since I’ve been to Paris, but I think you and I like all the same spots! Le Sacre Couer at Montmartre was my absolute favorite. What beauty from all directions!
Hi Jeanine! That is definitely my favorite, too! I love bringing my kids there, but I also love a night out with my honey at Montmartre.
